The Korea analogy (and Applied History) continue to catch on

Yet more figures of eminence are getting behind the analogy. General Lord Dannatt (retired Head of the British Army) and Lord Andrew Roberts:

General Lord Dannatt: “We have to say: this is where we are today, what is going to happen? This is where I think the parallels going back to Korea become instructive. I can’t see, logically, any circumstances in which Russian forces under Putin would voluntarily withdraw from eastern Ukraine. Ukrainians, even supported by further firepower and know-how from the West – I can’t see them now being strong enough to kick the Russians out. So therefore, de facto, if there is a ceasefire, it’s going to be along the current line of engagement. And that has parallels with the 38th parallel situation. It then begs: what happens thereafter? This is again where the parallels become quite interesting…”

Lord Roberts: “It could be like Korea, where you just have a demilitarised zone, right the way, ~1,000 miles across south eastern Europe, which is protected by soldiers on each side...”

General Lord Dannatt: “This, you have to say, is a pretty appalling prospect, but it’s in some ways the most logical and likely one.”

Yet ~all editors continue to ignore it.

Peculiar that it’s easier to get through to the most esteemed historians, generals, czars and Presidential advisors than it is the people whose job is supposed to be covering robust arguments for world-important topics.

The West had significantly better negotiating leverage a year ago. Let’s hope we’ve not left it too late.
